WATER/STORM DAMAGE

Although water damage is usually not as devastating as a fire, it occurs rather suddenly and is a little more difficult to diagnose or determine the cause. Those losses which are caused by a broken pipe are easy to figure out, while those coming from a roof or exterior source can be rather elusive.

Water damage occurring in the lower level is not as troublesome as it seems.  By nature, it seeks the lowest level, and affects only the rooms in that particular area.  However, minor leaks which occur above other areas, have the potential of causing damage from the highest original area of the structure, to the lowest level of the building.

Some of the most common causes of water damage are:

  • silt in washing hose
  • dishwasher malfunction
  • aquarium leak
  • release of shut off valve fitting (usually under a sink or behind a toilet)
  • worn out drain lines
  • worn our missing shingles
  • worn flashing on a roof
  • waterbed burst
  • commode/sink overflow
  • sewage backup
  • malfunctioning sump pump
  • foundation leak

Water damage can also lead to damages such as mold, and mildew. These problems seem irrelevant in the beginning stages of the loss, but can become the primary cause of damage and inconvenience if not treated efficiently.

It is not important because of the ever-changing nature of insurance that you determine the kinds of water damage or losses that are and are not covered by your policy. This is one area where coverage and coverage limits widely from insurance company to insurance company.
